Is Liquid Screed Suitable For A Garage Floor?

I’m Andy Parkin Managing Director of the Multi-Award Winning Speed Screed. Thank you very much for your question, Chris.

Your question is:

“Is liquid screed suitable for a garage floor? Floor will have 120 mm insulation under it.”

Watch Andy’s video to find out his answer:

I think what we could do with knowing is what is the end-use.

Is it that it is to be used as a garage afterwards and does it need to be a wearing surface? Or is the use changing and there is going to be some floor coverings?

Let us assume that it is going to be converted and used for things other than a garage. It is not going to be a wearing surface, and you are going to be placing floor coverings on top, carpet, tiles, etc.

Floor coverings will take the wear element away from the screed.

It is perfectly acceptable to have 120 mm of insulation, and there would be no problem with screeds being laid on top.

You are looking at two main options:

  1. Calcium sulphate screed (calcium sulphate binder).
  2. Cementitious liquid screed (cement-based).

With those two options minimum depth domestically is 35 mm.  If using wet underfloor heating pipes, the minimum coverage over the pipes is 20mm (with selected liquid screeds, 30mm with others)

There is a specialist product that depending on the strength of the insulation, will go down to 30mm. But generally, for the majority of the liquid screeds, you are looking at 35mm minimum depth.

As long as you are able to obtain the minimum depth, and don’t require a wearing screed.  The two liquid screed options are perfect
