When we talk about garage floor screed, there are a few different situations where screed is used.
New Build
When working with a new build, the garage floor screed will generally be structural concrete. The garage floor will always need a structural substrate. A simple concrete floor will provide that requirement. Normally delivered in a ready-mix truck mix, laid to a slight fall.
The surface needs to be a wearing surface, if no floor covering are to be laid, and again structural concrete will perform to resist surface abrasion.
Overlay
If the current Garage Floor Screed needs an overlay, perhaps to level, or repair, then we are generally looking at a thin Levelling Compound.
Any cracks should be repaired before the compound is laid, a two-part epoxy resin should be suitable.
A bonding agent would need be applied to the substrate before the screed is laid. The substrate should be clean, dry, no contamination, and sound condition.
The surface may need to be mechanically prepared before bonding.
All those elements need to be considered to ensure the product will bond to the substrate.
If the ongoing use is still that of a typical garage, the levelling compound needs to a one capable of being a be wearing surface. Instarmac Level IT Top can be laid up to thickness of 15mm.
Change Of Use
If the use is changing to a living area, no longer needs to be a wearing surface, needs levelling to take the fall out of the floor, and perhaps underfloor heating installed? Then the garage floor screed needs to be thicker, ideal products to go over Underfloor Heating are:
• Gypsol HTC – Flowing screed, 20mm only above the pipe
• Gyvlon Thermio+ – Flowing screed, Great Thermal Conductivity
• Topflow screed C Belitex – Flowing screed, fast drying
• Mapescreed 704 – Sand and Cement, Fast Drying
• Retanol Xtreme – Sand and Cement, Super-Fast Drying
